Network Appliance Unveils Uncompromised Security Initiative

Vision Challenges Industry to Redefine Data Security; Aims to Deliver New Standard to Enterprises

SYDNEY, Australia – December 1, 2005 -- Network Appliance, Inc. (NASDAQ:NTAP), a leading provider of enterprise storage solutions, today unveiled its Uncompromised Security Initiative, a visionary program that challenges the status quo of data security and promises to deliver industry-best solutions to the enterprise.

The introduction of the NetApp initiative comes in the wake of an unprecedented number of high-profile security breaches and incidents of lost backup tapes, viruses, spyware, and hacking attacks. For instance, in the past year, leading enterprises in the United States have reported security incidents that exposed the personal information of more than 50 million consumers combined and exposed numerous companies to potential legal and regulatory action.

In addition, enterprises are struggling to maintain compliance with new and ever-changing government regulations, including Sarbanes Oxley, the Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act (GLBA) and the Health Information Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) that can impact a company’s overall data security infrastructure and processes.

“The list of security issues plaguing the enterprise is endless and costly,” said Jon Oltsik, senior analyst, Enterprise Strategy Group. “As threats increase, enterprises must consider a comprehensive security strategy from the edge to the data center or face the inevitable consequences.”

There are two core tenets that define uncompromised security. First, most security solutions today currently focus on the network perimeter or specific devices and people, but fail to provide security for data throughout its entire lifecycle. Very few solutions today secure the data itself as it is stored and transported across multiple heterogeneous systems. An uncompromised security approach provides strong protection for data--regardless of its location or what devices it touches—and while that data is in-flight and at rest across the entire enterprise.

Second, enterprises today do not have the option of trading off performance, interoperability, high availability, or simplicity when they deploy security solutions. There is simply no room for compromises, given the critical nature of IT systems to business today.

“The accepted definition of data security is alarmingly weak,” said Jay Kidd, senior vice president and general manager of the emerging products group at Network Appliance. “Just read the newspaper. Virtually every day, there’s another story on a virus, spyware, internal data theft, identity theft, or a hacking incident. In our work developing security solutions, Network Appliance has realized that enterprises and consumers are settling for unacceptable security, either because their vendor is not providing a full solution or because they fear compromising their business performance. But they don’t have to settle. The age of uncompromised security is here.”

NetApp has numerous product lines shipping today that enable it to deliver uncompromised security, including Decru® DataFort™ storage security appliances, NetApp® disk systems running Data ONTAP® security features, and NetCache® internet access and security appliances, as well as strong partnerships with leading vendors such as Symantec that enhance the security portfolio. The NetApp Uncompromised Security Initiative provides a vision and a roadmap for customers who expect best-in-class data management, coupled with military-grade security.

In addition to building security into all areas of its product portfolio, NetApp is rolling out a variety of educational tools to help customers better understand their data security risks and the ways they can tune their IT infrastructure to mitigate those risks without having to “rip and replace” or make unrealistic investments. NetApp is also hosting a variety of seminars, tutorials, and other forums on the topic of security.
