Nikon recalls SLR batteries that may catch fire

Nikon has announced that some of the rechargeable Li-ion Batteries used in its Digital SLR cameras may overheat and catch fire, and has issued a worldwide recall and replacement.

The recall of certain EN-EL3 batteries sold with Nikon D100, D70 and D50 SLR's between August 2004 and October 2005 is in response to 4 cases worldwide, none of which have been in Australia.

A spokesperson for Nikon in Australia was unable to give figures of how many of these batteries have been sold locally, though half a million have been sold worldwide.
