Global Hyatt Implements Hyperion System 9

 • 08 November, 2005 12:44

With five operating units in 44 different countries managing 825 properties, Global Hyatt was faced with the challenge of managing a significant amount of financial, forecasting and planning information. The premier lodging company needed a solution that would allow it to simplify its information delivery while at the same time ensuring accuracy, speed and consistency of data.

Finding that neither standard reporting software nor conventional consolidation software met all of its requirements, Global Hyatt implemented Hyperion System 9, a comprehensive performance management system that delivers precisely the financial, operational and market data Global Hyatt users need, in a format customised to their roles and responsibilities.

Hyperion System 9 is the first performance management solution in the industry to integrate financial management applications with a business intelligence platform into a single system. Accessed through a standard Web browser, Hyperion System 9 delivers financial reporting, consolidation, forecasting, planning and scorecarding through a single entry point.

“We’re enabling our users with direct access to reliable and relevant information. Hyperion System 9 provides a single system to interact with all different types of data regardless of the source of information,” said Sufel Barkat, assistant vice president for Hyatt Hotels Corporation. “The solution not only provides financial and operational data, but also provides overall market data from the hospitality industry. The users have comprehensive information that provides the best possible context for decision making.”

“Additionally, our users no longer have to back in and out of multiple applications and piece together information from each one to get a clear picture of our performance,” Barkat continued. “Instead, Hyperion System 9 makes it possible for us to view unified data through one click access, with all users able to look at the same data in the same way.”

Next steps for the implementation will be to deploy the Hyperion Master Data Management (MDM) capability to centrally manage data structures. MDM will make it possible for the company to manage changes down to the various source systems, aiding in the unified collection of data.

Managing Proactively

By enabling users to access and analyse data in real time, Hyperion System 9 has armed them with relevant, accurate information needed to map tactics to strategy and manage day-to-day business in the most efficient, profitable manner possible.

“Just viewing historical data, as we used to do, was not enough,” said Gebhard Rainer, vice president for Hotel Finance and Technology for Hyatt International Corporation. “By providing a current view, Hyperion System 9 makes it possible for us to extend Business Performance Management down to every manager within the corporation. The new solution provides real-time results that allow us in a graphic, alphanumeric way to view key information and adjust our course as necessary.”

Ease of use of the Hyperion System 9 Workspace environment has been a significant benefit in the new, proactive approach. “Hyperion System 9 enables us to look at a dashboard with the click of a button,” said Barkat. “For example, general managers are able to gain insight into daily, weekly and monthly performance just by bringing up the browser and selecting Hyperion System 9. The user can drill into critical areas and find out exactly where business needs to be redirected to help positively influence revenues.”

Partner Involvement

Hyperion partner Teradata, a division of NCR Corporation, played a key role in implementing the Hyperion System 9 solution, providing data warehousing software and technology for external information not captured in Hyperion databases. Teradata worked with Hyperion to deliver a very robust engine that ‘cleanses’ information received from external parties, making it possible for users to view accurate data from multiple sources in real-time.

“Teradata and Hyperion worked together to provide an integrated enterprise solution for Global Hyatt that will help the company make critical decisions through a comprehensive, single view of business performance,” said John Dinning, vice president Solutions Marketing and Alliances, Teradata. “The solution provides visibility, reduces business risk and facilitates improved decision making for Hyatt’s worldwide operations.”

“For the first time Global Hyatt is able to view a single source for timely, accurate, centralised data according to the role of the user,” said Rich Clayton, vice president of product marketing for Hyperion. “Hyperion System 9 delivers information in real-time, so that smart decisions can be made quickly, increasing productivity and lowering business risk.”
