WD serves up Caviar class

Western Digital's new Caviar WD2500KS is an amazingly quiet 250GB Serial ATA II drive that is suitable for a silent PC or media centre. We could barely hear it spinning or seeking during file transfer tests. This is due in part to its fluid dynamic bearing motor, more efficient algorithm designs for the supply of power to this motor and also to the mechanics that control the read/write heads.

We also noticed that this drive runs very cool. After a full hour of copy operations, the temperature was only slightly over 36 degrees. The SATA II interface of this drive provides a bandwidth of 300Mbps between the drive and the motherboard chipset. Likewise, SATA II features Native Command Queuing (NCQ) which optimises the order of data requests in order to promote efficiency and minimise wear and tear on the disk.

We tested the drive by copying 31GB of data from one location on the drive to another and this task was completed at a rate of 911MB per minute. The formatted capacity of this drive is close to 233GB and a retail price of $265, which translates to a cost per gigabyte of $1.13.
