Netsky still pesky

Antivirus vendor, Sophos, has issued its list of the top 10 viruses affecting PCs over the past month. The new findings reveal Netsky-P, the worm written by convicted German teenager Sven Jaschan, continues to plague the highest number of users 19 months after its first detection.

The second and third most troublesome nasties were the -BE and -AS strains of Mytob. According to the vendor, the average age of the leading viruses is eight months. This proved a large number of users were still being complacent about installing and updating protection, it claimed. "Businesses and home users alike have had 19 months to update their software, but an alarming number still obviously either aren't aware of the worm or haven't taken the opportunity to prevent it," Sophos senior security consultant, Carole Theriault, said.

On the bright side, Sophos reported a further drop in the number of infected emails - the fifth in successive months.
