Consumer Notebook Sales Increased Dramatically in Q4 2004, Finds IDC

<p>NORTH SYDNEY, March 3rd, 2005 – IDC has recently released results of 4Q 2004 Notebook PC market sales. The notebook PC market saw a solid increase of 9% sequentially and a rise of 41% compared to the same period in 2003. This indicates continued growth in the local market and an increase in acceptance of the mobile form factor.</p>
<p>IDC has found that the dynamics of the Australian notebook PC market have changed greatly over the last few quarters. The following are key points for the notebook market as the chapter closed in 2004, and the market entered a new year in 2005:</p>
<p>1) Consumer notebooks are experiencing massive growth, as evident by the 23% increase from 3Q 2004 and by a 110% growth in comparison to the same period last year. IDC sees the decreasing prices and beefed up specs converting purchases away from the desktop form factor. Additionally, the huge rise in digital content and wireless networks in the home are two major factors in notebook market growth.</p>
<p>2) Over 75% of notebooks were sold with embedded WLAN in 4Q. The WLAN attachment ratio of the notebook market increased by 140% from 4Q 2003. The sheer number of wireless enabled notebooks is serving as a push factor for installing WLANs in Australia.</p>
<p>3) The number of widescreen notebooks in Australia has doubled from 1Q 2004 to 4Q 2004. IDC expects this number to increase as the cost of manufacturing widescreen LCDs continues to decline, and as consumer interest in multi-media rises.</p>
<p>Michael Sager, Market Analyst, PC Hardware said, "Toshiba continued to lead the local market and grew by almost six percentage points in share from the third quarter. This growth was largely thanks to Toshiba's success in the consumer space, where one in every three consumer notebooks sold was a Toshiba. HP also saw growth as it gained back its second place position from Dell. In addition to losing its second place position to HP in the final quarter of 2004, Dell also saw the largest sequential decline in market share amongst the top 6 notebook vendors."</p>
<p>"Rounding out the top six were, Acer, IBM, and Apple who each lost varying amounts of share to the competition from 3Q to 4Q 2004", added Mr. Sager.</p>
