Nokia rolls out entry-level CDMA phones

Nokia will start selling low-cost CDMA handsets for the emerging markets.

Nokia will offer two new CDMA (Code Division Multiple Access) handsets that are part of its continued push into emerging markets, the company announced Wednesday.

The phones, which are due in the first quarter next year, have more features than typical entry level handsets, according to Nokia. For example, the Nokia 1255 includes a speakerphone, voice recorder and built-in games. The Nokia 2355 includes a built-in FM radio, a WAP (Wireless Application Protocol) browser and the ability to download applications.

Nokia began emphasizing a plan to deliver low cost products to emerging markets earlier this year, including both handsets and network equipment, in a bid to grow the overall mobile phone market. With regions such as Europe, North America and parts of Asia growing increasingly saturated, Nokia hopes that new markets, including Africa, Latin America and less developed parts of Asia, will fuel future growth.

The company has already introduced low-cost GSM (Global System for Mobile Communications) handsets that can be used in Africa and other regions. CDMA is less prevalent than GSM but is used in parts of Latin America and Asia, including India.

Nokia representatives in Europe could not providing pricing for the handsets early Wednesday.

Nokia also introduced two mid-tier CDMA phones that include Bluetooth. Users of the Nokia 2855 and 6165 phones will also be able to download applications and streamed audio and video content, said Nokia, based in Espoo, Finland.
