PERTH, Australia (October 27, 2005) – BankWest, Western Australia’s leading full-service bank, has upgraded its networking solutions from Nortel to improve the speed and security of its electronic services for Internet and ATM banking customers.

“We use Nortel’s technology to manage our clients’ secure online sessions, and secure the communication links back to our main servers,” said BankWest CIO Joe Deragon. “A big advantage of Nortel’s solution is that our servers can be located in different parts of the network and still be load balanced to operate at peak efficiency.”

While the new technology also makes financial sense, according to Deragon it’s more about making the banking experience more efficient, intuitive and secure.

“In today’s competitive market, BankWest prides itself on the provision of easy-to-use, highly secure Internet and electronic services. The Nortel solution we’ve chosen provides a reliable, stable, scalable and secured network environment from which we can continue to refine and deliver outstanding customer service.”

BankWest is part of the HBOS Australia group, and in its home state of Western Australia is market-leading bank. Supported by UK parent HBOS plc, HBOS Australia has a growth strategy in place to grow its business across all brands and become a major player in the financial services industry.

Mark Stevens, president, Australia and New Zealand, Nortel, said Nortel’s technology offers the best available combination of value, security and ease-of-deployment for distributed banking environments.

“We have the features, the technology, and the proven performance banks are looking for when it comes to securing their customer-facing systems,” said Stevens.

“Our solutions ignite and power global commerce for some of the world’s largest banks and financial institutions, giving them the end-to-end security they need while improving performance and reliability in other areas.”

BankWest purchased a number of Nortel Application Switch 2424s to provide load balancing for various customer-facing applications with end-to-end Secure Socket Layer (SSL) encryption and acceleration. It has also purchased Nortel application switches and VPN gateways for its main data centre.
