VoIP to hit mass market shelves for Christmas

Netgear and engin have announced a co-branding partnership which will see their products bundled and sold through Harvey Norman and the channel.

The relationship means Netgear's latest residential VoIP product - a wired two-port telephone router - will be bundled with engin's comprehensive communications service.

Netgear's Director of Partnerships and Services, Ryan Parker, said the partnership further strengthened Netgear's presence in the VoIP space and provided its customers with an increased range of VoIP service alternatives.

"We anticipate that VoIP will become a mass consumer product by Christmas, as people increasingly realise the benefits and cost savings associated with this technology," he said.

The service allowed users to take advantage of having two real phone numbers and it would provide voice prioritisation, Parker said.

"It is easy to set-up and use," he said. "All you have to do is buy the product, install it and phone engin to enable the service."

Labelled as a Netgear Broadband Voice Adaptor but also carrying the engin branding on the box, the product is available from Harvey Norman retail stores for $179. It is also available to the channel through distributors such as Synnex and Ingram Micro.

The partnership follows a series of consumer VoIP announcements recently.

Last week, Linksys announced it had paired up with Skype to put together a similar bundle for the consumer market. This followed the launch of a co-branding deal between NetComm and GOTalk.
