Seagate Technology has announced a five-year warranty for its internal desktop and notebook hard drives.
The extended warranty covers drives bought from all of Seagate's authorised dealers, senior director of global channel marketing, Joe Cousins, said.
"We're working to get closer to our customers -- and this move is part of that process,"he said. "Of course, we're also making a statement about the quality and reliability of our products," he said.
Drives shipped to manufacturers since June 1 were covered by the longer warranty, Cousins said.
Although some kits on dealer shelves now may indicate a one-year warranty on the box, these will actually have the five-year warranty.
"The new five-year warranty enables our channel partners to sell the best drives to their customers and minimises the cost and time they spend on warranty related issues," Seagate vice-president of global marketing, Jeff Loebbaka, said.
Seagate's external desktop hard drives will continue to have the one-year warranties.
Warranties for OEM drives - those bought as part of computer systems - would not be directly affected, as they were usually determined by the computer vendor, Seagate said.
