Steinhardt calls time

Next Byte director, Adam Steinhardt, is planning to spend some time on the beach after ending his 10-year association with what is now the country's largest Apple reseller.

Having formed the company back in 1995, Steinhardt said he felt it was time for a change. His business partners, Tim Kleemann and Crawford Giles, will continue to run the business.

Steinhardt said it had been his goal to build a thriving national reseller chain and, having achieved that, it was a good time to leave.

"I've had enough of the Mac and IT world for the moment - it drains you after a while," he said. "It was a pretty easy decision to make.

Crawford has a finance background and Tim has 25 years in the game, so they're in the perfect position to growth the business from $70 to $100 million a year. I can go back to growing a small business and spending some time on a beach."

Steinhardt used his stake in Next Byte to buy the company's two design divisions - DesignTrix, which specialises in graphics design, and digital photography retail outlet, Digital DaVinci.

"We will give people a new take on what they can do with their photos," he said. "Digital DaVinci is a brand that could go around Australia." Looking back over his tenure, Steinhardt said Apple had made some interesting channel decisions but insisted the highs had outweighed the lows.

"Going from the lowest ranked reseller in Adelaide to winning several awards as the biggest in the country is definitely a highlight," he said. Looking ahead, Kleemann said he was optimistic about the company's prospects.

"It's not just a throwaway line - these past two years have been the best we have seen in a long time," he said. "I have faith that Apple will continue to come out of leftfield with new products that really shake up the market."

Steinhardt leaves Next Byte with a staff of 138, 13 retail locations and annual revenues of about $70 million a year.
