Acterna Introduces First-of-Kind VoIP Test Solution

 • 30 July, 2004 10:07

- Complete solution enables field technicians to coordinate their testing and troubleshooting with engineers at a central location, dramatically simplifying and speeding VoIP Installation and maintenance

Hong Kong: Thursday, July 29 2004 -- Acterna today announced the Acterna Voice over IP (VoIP) Solution, the industry’s only integrated VoIP test and management solution for service providers and cable operators. Used alone or together, purpose-built, bundled sets of test instruments, systems, and software are coordinated with each stage of VoIP service delivery, reducing costs associated with the rollout and day-to-day maintenance of VoIP service offerings. Meeting industry demand for an economical VoIP services test solution, the combined solution is immediately available across Asia Pacific.

To date, VoIP deployment testing has been principally handled by well-trained data engineers armed with expensive protocol analyzer test products. As VoIP adoption accelerates and reaches a mass deployment stage, less experienced field technicians will depend on the experience of data engineers to efficiently install and troubleshoot VoIP services. Acterna’s VoIP Solution is the only suite of products in the industry that can effectively enable collaboration between these two distinct workforces -- field technicians and data engineers/technical support. The VoIP Solution enables the field technician to coordinate troubleshooting with experienced/higher-tiered technicians at a central location by way of the Acterna HST-3000 for delivery over DSL, the Acterna DSAM series for cable operators, the Acterna DA-3400 or DA-3600A, and the Acterna PVA-1000 -- dramatically reducing the overall time to resolve VoIP deployment problems.

"For service providers, the Acterna VoIP Solution allows for more in-depth troubleshooting at the premise by less experienced technicians and leverages the use of experienced technicians without field deployment," said John Govert, global vice president of strategy development for Acterna’s Telecom Division. "For example, voice packet captures at a customer site can be sent to a remote server for in-depth voice and protocol analysis, rather than requiring the deployment of a higher-tiered, more experienced data engineer to the field. Any technician with access rights to the server can then download the packet capture and conduct voice and packet analysis, reducing costs and improving quality by eliminating escalations in service problems."

About the Acterna HST-3000
The Acterna HST-3000 is the first hand-held field test tool for basic turn-up and troubleshooting of VoIP deployment, supporting physical layer analysis through packet metrics, signaling analysis and voice quality determination. HST-3000 capabilities allow packet capture of live VoIP calls, including VoIP call storage and an integrated FTP (File Transfer Protocol) capability to send captured VoIP calls to be analyzed by Acterna’s PVA-1000 software. The HST was created to improve efficiency and lower the costs of installing, maintaining, and troubleshooting business and residential services and networks. The HST-3000 combines copper, voice and data service testing features with unparalleled process automation capabilities in a lightweight, battery-operated unit. The Acterna HST-3000 VoIP Tester was named Product of the Year for 2002 by INTERNET TELEPHONY® magazine.

About the Acterna Digital Services Activation Meter (DSAM) Family of Testers
The 'cable cousin' to the HST-3000, Acterna’s Digital Service Activation Meter (DSAM) enables cable network technicians to test cable modem services, digital video, analog video and PacketCableTM based voice over IP (VoIP). By significantly improving performance management and enhancing measurement and optimization techniques, the DSAM addresses the growing challenges faced by the cable industry as they deploy new video on demand (VOD), VoIP and other emerging services. The Acterna DSAM family of testers offers the cable modem installer a comprehensive cable services and DOCSIS/EuroDOCSIS measurement package in a single meter. The DSAM enables cable installers, regardless of skill and experience levels, to increase the speed and efficiency at which they deploy high-speed data services. The DSAM was the recipient of the 2002 Communications Technology Magazine Reader’s Choice Award.

About Acterna PVA-1000 Software
The Acterna PVA-1000, the industry’s most powerful software product for troubleshooting VoIP problems, is patent-pending software developed in concert with industry-leading VoIP equipment manufacturers and service providers. Going beyond simply identifying VoIP call problems, the PVA-1000 performs detailed analysis and troubleshooting of VoIP telephone calls, providing quick identification of VoIP transport-related issues by graphing jitter and packet loss. It plays back the audio of the original telephone call using jitter buffer emulation and WAV files and can also provide full VoIP protocol decodes.

Unlike any other product in the industry, the PVA-1000 can combine these tasks to accurately re-create the user experience. In an industry first, the PVA-1000 enables customers to build and distribute custom Ethernet capture files, allowing users to isolate only those calls considered to have unacceptable quality and eliminating the need to dispatch support personnel to remote sites. The PVA-1000 manages Ethernet capture files from the Acterna DA-3400/DA-3600A and the Acterna HST-3000 (as well as analyzers from other vendors), and provides multiple licensing methods, ensuring the most flexible, cost-effective deployment possible.

About the Acterna DA-3400 and DA-3600A Protocol Analyzers
The Acterna DA-3400 is one of the most widely deployed IP network troubleshooting and data analysis platforms. The Acterna DA-3600A, the industry’s most powerful analyzer of wire-speed performance up to 2.4 Gbps, as well as the most comprehensive hardware filtering mechanism in the industry, consolidates the DA-3400 and DA-3600 platforms, historically known as the Cyclone family of analyzers. The consolidation of this family of products provides the DA-3600A with real-time and historical analysis of data/IP traffic to assist operators and IT professionals in identifying the root cause of problems in complex, multi-application data networks. Its intuitive graphical displays, on-line expert analysis system, and hardware-enabled analysis engine enable service providers to quickly identify difficult-to-find problems on LAN, LAN/WAN, ATM, Frame, and POS networks, as well as MPLS over Ethernet.
