Network Appliance builds framework for seamless consolidation and management of remote office data for Cisco Wide Area File Services

Collaboration Supports Customers’ Compliance, Protection, and Security Requirements Across Distributed Enterprises

SUNNYVALE, Calif. — Aug. 12, 2005 — Network Appliance, Inc. (NASDAQ: NTAP) today announced an agreement for cooperative support of hardware and software interoperability with Cisco Systems® to help customers take full advantage of the potential of their heterogeneous data centers. The relationship validates technology interoperability and cooperative support processes for Cisco’s Wide Area File Services (WAFS) solution with NetApp® fabric-attached storage (FAS) systems, NetApp NearStore® nearline storage systems, and NetApp V-Series virtualization systems. The alignment of Cisco and NetApp technical services, customer support tools, and joint support will assist large enterprise customers address the unique challenges associated with the consolidation of remote office/branch office (ROBO) data, provide confidence that systems are fully interoperable, and provide the peace of mind of world-class cooperative vendor support.

“Helping to ensure that data integrity is maintained during infrastructure consolidation mandates that extraordinary diligence be applied to the validation of hardware and software interoperability,” said Faiyaz Shahpurwala, vice president of Cisco’s Advanced Services Group. “Decentralized storage architectures often rely upon replication and backup and restore policies that differ from the centralized data center. If the unique characteristics of the remote office/branch office (ROBO) implementation are not understood and fully considered in interoperability validation, the network performance, data management and protection benefits inherent to centralization can be compromised.”

The Cisco WAFS solution, the open standards–based Cisco File Engine Series, is designed to consolidate remote enterprise data from branch offices to a corporate data center, while providing a local area network LAN–like experience to remote users. NetApp storage systems store and manage the consolidated data and protect it through cost-effective business continuance, data protection, and regulatory compliance software solutions. Given the added demands of security and regulatory compliance within today's data centers, true interoperability between the two product offerings is integral for data integrity in the consolidation of remote office/branch office data.

“We are pleased to collaborate with Cisco to deliver an industry-leading WAFS solution for increased data protection in remote offices,” said Patrick Rogers, vice president of Products and Partners at Network Appliance. “Our interoperability and support collaboration demonstrates a shared focus on solving new and emerging enterprise data challenges, not only at a corporate headquarters or data center, but also for remote customer locations and for various types of data.”

The agreement establishes that criteria for interoperability testing by independent third parties have been met with NetApp FAS primary storage systems, NetApp NearStore nearline storage systems, and NetApp V-Series virtualization systems. With these offerings, Cisco enterprise and service provider customers can now deploy an even broader range of business solutions that foster innovation and drive rapid adoption of business-critical technologies.
