South African component maker bobs up

Eyeing a profitable niche in the computer components market, South African distributor Pinnacle Micro has set up shop in Australia and is expected to be trading out of its headquarters in Sydney as early as this week.

According to Johnathan Levin, a director at Pinnacle Micro, the company in South Africa supplies and distributes a range of components including AOpen motherboards and modems, and a range of PC products from Compaq and Packard-Bell.

Levin also took the opportunity to introduce Pinnacle's own branding strategy called Proline, that includes internally developed and rebadged PCs and a range of component solutions from network interface cards to PC cameras.

Levin said the Proline solution would be attractive for resellers as it enables them to offer a complete package.

And while the company's Sydney base is a good start, Levin recognises the need to expand operations. He said the company has already established a warehouse in Sydney and is looking to build reseller relationships in other capitals to distribute Pinnacle products.

Pinnacle plans to also beef up its technical support offerings over the next few months to take some of the load off its Sydney operations.
