WA Local Government Association Completes Data Consolidation Project

ASI Solutions Centralises Data on Network Appliance Storage

###

Network Appliance, the leader in advanced networked storage solutions, today announced The Western Australia Local Government Association (WALGA) has successfully completed a storage consolidation project, centralising its data on a new NetApp enterprise storage system.

NetApp Partner ASI Solutions implemented the new storage architecture to store, manage and protect WALGA’s highly sensitive economic, social, political and personal data.

The NetApp system provides a major boost to WALGA’s information management and data security capabilities and promises to significantly reduce the organisation’s IT administration overheads.

Previously the association relied on multiple server-based storage systems.

WALGA is the peak lobbying and advocacy organisation for Western Australia’s Local Government bodies and provides consulting and policy advice services to Ministers, politicians and senior bureaucrats. WALGA represents the interests of 144 Local Governments, some 1,400 elected members, 12,000 employees and more than 1.9 million constituents in the State.

Moreno Mattaboni, WALGA’s IT Services Coordinator, said, “Doing more with less and keeping our overheads low is a main priority for WALGA as we secure our funding from membership subscriptions, services and business grants. We were impressed with the demonstrated flexibility, scalability, ease of administration and anticipated total cost of ownership of the NetApp system.

“The NetApp system has proven to be highly reliable for us, reducing our backup windows to near zero time. Importantly the cutover to the new system was a breeze with the help of ASI Solutions,” Mattaboni said.

Malcolm Cole, WA State Manager for ASI Solutions, said, “As a key member of WALGA’s technology supplier panel we have been providing equipment and implementation services to the State’s Local Government organisations for more than four years. The new NetApp system has enabled the Association to greatly reduce its costs while providing a solid information management platform to support future data growth.”

The NetApp system provides IP SAN storage for WALGA’s Microsoft Exchange 2003 and SQL applications using the iSCSI protocol. iSCSI is a TCP/IP-based storage protocol that that uses familiar, easy-to-configure, affordable Ethernet infrastructure. Simultaneously the NetApp system supports NAS protocols to provide Windows file sharing to PC clients.

NetApp provides WALGA with comprehensive data protection, securing all data types with NetApp Snapshot capabilities for automated, near instantaneous, application-level backups and rapid restores.
