China Unicom completes second phase expansion of world’s largest IP video communications network

Polycom selected as primary supplier of video communications solutions

SYDNEY, Australia (3 August, 2004) Polycom®, Inc. (NASDAQ: PLCM), the world’s leading provider of unified collaborative communications solutions, has announced the completion of the China Unicom Phase II extension project for the world’s largest commercial broadband video communications network. The network covers more than 320 cities in China and other areas including Hong Kong, Taiwan, the United States, Singapore and Australia. Polycom successfully assisted China Unicom in the development and deployment of Phase I of the project in 2002.

Following the successful completion of the project hundreds of Polycom’s video conferencing terminal devices and an additional 22 Polycom MGC-100™ systems were deployed. China Unicom’s expansion of their video communication network is a result of the growing demand for video conferencing services and the successful extension of the network connection to cities in various provinces. With the recent completion of Phase II, China Unicom’s ‘UNI-VIDEO’ business is now supporting service ports running into the tens of thousands.

The expansion further enhances service-loading capacity of the network, guaranteeing the services for existing customers while supporting future increases of new users, and enables customers to access the network more conveniently. Multiple video terminals can be connected to a single port allowing easy expansion and greater cost-savings in terms of equipment investment. UNI-VIDEO users can freely use the video services without the need of additional arrangements, for instance by a third-party operator.

With extensive coverage, superior systems adaptability and the support of a wide array of interfaces, the network not only guarantees seamless communications within and across provinces, but also satisfies the needs for international video conferencing by allowing cross-country and cross-regional connections.

“We’re thrilled with the rapid growth of the UNI-VIDEO business and, as a result of its success, provides irrefutable evidence in support of our decision to deliver video conferencing services to our wide customer base,” said Liu Yunjie, former vice president of China Unicom. “Another wise decision was the selection of Polycom as the partner for both Phase I and Phase II. Both China Unicom and Polycom collaborated in the development of high-quality products according to the requirements and met the needs for business growth. Polycom’s unparalleled stability, scalability and compatibility together with excellent services have satisfied and exceeded our business needs, and paved the cornerstone for fast development.”

In the deployment of the project, Polycom presented a high-level service. The products and solutions provided by Polycom in Phase I were recognised by China Unicom who presented a special “Service Excellence” award to the company in 2003.

“The completion of Phase II and the fact that Polycom was again selected by China Unicom demonstrates our ability to tailor solutions to match and exceed our customers’ needs. China Unicom has built a very successful video communications service using Polycom equipment as the cornerstone; an exceptional testimonial for the quality of our products and solutions,” said Steven Li, country manager of Polycom China. “Polycom is placing an even greater emphasis on the development of strategic relationships with customers and is committed to offering quality services to support the growth of our partners, who will gain a significantly sharper competitive edge.”
