University of Canberra first to deploy NETGEAR AutoCell technology

 • 07 July, 2005 11:08

Sydney, Australia (July 6, 2005) – NETGEAR (Nasdaq: NTGR), a leading provider of easy to use, high-performance networking products, has announced that the University of Canberra is the first Australian test site to successfully launch a wireless network based on its latest AutoCell technology.

AutoCell is a new RF management technology that maximises wireless LAN (WLAN) network performance in high-density, high interference environments like university campuses. It also simplifies network installation, eliminating the need for costly, time-intensive site surveys or channel maps, and reduces total cost of ownership through a distributed technology that has no single point of failure.

The new University campus network includes 20 NETGEAR WG302 ProSafe Wireless Access Points that feature AutoCell technology, which enables the access points to automatically adjust signal levels, selecting channels and balancing the load among all available points to avoid interference and ensure total network coverage.

“Wireless access is now available in all major public areas of the campus, and NETGEAR’s AutoCell has proven to be a valuable enabler,” said Geoff Rozenberg, Network Services Manager, University of Canberra. “It has effectively improved network management, allowing us to increase the number of simultaneous wireless users in dense hotspots particularly in our refectory and library.”

The University is also a beta test site for an additional software program called AutoCell VIEW, which has yet to hit the Australian market. AutoCell VIEW transforms RF coverage into clear 2D images, allowing the University to manage its RF environments either locally or remotely. It helps administrators to troubleshoot network issues, plan WLAN expansion and monitor WLAN performance in real-time.

“The combination of AutoCell and AutoCell VIEW has allowed us to examine the patterns of usage of the access points and the density of users in a particular location. It enables us to provide the right amount of wireless coverage throughout the campus, with the software informing us which antenna pattern to select.”

Having been the first vendor in Australia to deliver AutoCell to the local market, NETGEAR now plans to integrate the technology into its business-class range of wireless switches. When used with the existing line of NETGEAR ProSafe Wireless Access Points, the switch will complete an affordable, scalable managed WLAN system that will enable administrators to centrally manage the WLAN from a single location with the ability to push policy and settings to all managed access points in the network.

An easy-to-use graphical user interface will also provide real-time status of the wireless network including access point/client association, relative access points transmit power and transmission channels.

“As wireless technology becomes standard throughout the education, government and corporate sectors, organisations are increasingly looking for ways to reduce the time and costs associated with deploying, securing and maintaining wireless networks,” said Katrina Myles, Education and Corporate Business Development Manager, NETGEAR.

“To this effect we have incorporated AutoCell Technology into our leading wireless products, providing users with an easy way to manage and maximise deployments involving large numbers of clients and multiple access points.”
