ViewSonic makes three-pronged projector play

ViewSonic has raised pressure levels in an already crowded projector market, with the release of three new models designed for the home, education and small business markets.

ViewSonic country manager, John Yeh, predicted all three would do well but highlighted its entry-level PJ402D, which is designed for home and small business. The vendor also released an ultra-small PJ256D designed for mobile business presentations and the PJ755D for high-usage corporate and education markets. All three models are distributed through Ingram Micro and Synnex.

"We have been carrying projectors for about three years, but we are now putting more focus on these products because the market is being stimulated by the an increase in home entertainment sales through both IT and CE vendors," Yeh said.

According to Yeh, falling projector prices have stimulated interest in the devices. The good news for resellers is that such products generally complement rather than replace other consumer electronic entertainment devices such as plasma and widescreen televisions.

Audio-visual specialist, Len Wallis, said projectors in the $2500-$7000 price bracket were doing particularly well.

"You can now sell a projector for $2500 that was worth $10,000 just three years ago," Wallis said. "That has certainly stimulated sales."

However, he also said resellers need to understand the market before they take the plunge. Wallis has three separate darkened rooms set up with a range of projectors so his customers can appreciate the differences between models.

With a broad range of vendors making a play for the projector space, units retail for between $2000 and $20,000. It is the channel's job to match models with customer requirements.

"Not many people use the projector for day to day use," Wallis said. "It's really more for special occasions. You need to find out what they want to do with the projectors. Videophiles and sports fanatics are our most important target customers."
