Chew joins mcr board

Mcr Computer Resources has appointed former Singtel Optus CIO, Professor Eng Chew, to its board of directors.

For the past six months Chew has been acting as an adviser to the infrastructure management specialist, consulting on strategic direction, the market and the channel.

As a director, Chew would now see that his vision for the company was put into practice, services manager, Geoff Bowker, said "His being appointed a director indicates that he has seen some strong opportunity for mcr and wants to see that opportunity pursued," Bowker said.

"Eng's understanding of the corporate market will be helpful in retaining our position there but, more importantly, he gives us the planning discipline needed to sustain growth."

Viewing the decline in its hardware business in the past few years as a warning bell, the company had originally approached Chew to help find a new growth strategy, Bowker said.

"He has been helping us identify what markets we need to be in and what offerings to provide," he said. "The opportunities we have had in professional services in particular have also attracted us to our new strategy."

This strategy would increasing rely on moving away from hardware-dependent services, Bowker said.

"Our hardware-related services have been successful but they have a limited growth capacity and fluctuate with hardware demand," he said. "Managed and professional services are less cyclical and have much greater growth potential."

As part of its growth strategy, mcr would also look to further address the needs of the SME market, Bowker said.

"The most effective players in this space will continue to be the mid-tier and smaller players who have traditionally serviced it," he said. "But there are opportunities for companies like us to assist bigger players to enter the market."

The company was currently assessing vendor partnerships and discussions were underway, Bowker said.
