Nova aims to recycle for charity

A Victorian IT support company has taken a benevolent approach to asset disposal, announcing a recycling for charity initiative.

Nova IT Consulting is refurbishing IT gear, which it plans to donate to community groups and non-profit organisations. It will also distribute the proceeds from these sales between nominated charities.

Managing director, David Vidos, said it launched a recycling service after customers expressed concerns about the disposal of old and unwanted IT equipment.

Impending changes to recycling laws had caused many organisations to investigate legitimate ways of moving old gear, he said.

Goods currently being repaired and passed on by Nova include used desktops, notebooks, networking hardware, servers, printers and monitors.

The company is refurbishing goods at its depot in Melbourne, and is working with recycling partner, Green PC, to take gear in Brisbane, Perth and Canberra. It is currently holding discussions with third parties in Sydney, Darwin, Hobart and Adelaide.

"We want to find people who will take the gear for nothing and either resell it or give it to the community," Vidos said.

But he said Nova was finding it difficult to balance the recycling program with its core support business.

"We can't house the stuff we have got and have to turn people away," Vidos said.

As a result, Nova was now looking for a financial sponsor to fund an expansion of its recycling facilities. It was hoping to attract about $20,000.

"We need a sponsor to help expand our operations and give us more room to process gear," he said.

The assistance would also be used to cover software issues, such as Windows licensing, Vidos said.

Nova was also speaking with various local councils to find volunteers to help find homes for the refurbished gear.

The company is working with several non-profit organisations, including SIDs and Kids, the Ronald McDonald House charities, The Royal Children's Hospital and Canteen. Vidos said he was keen to add other charities.
