Bigger features, slimline design: Ricoh launches new digital camera

 • 11 April, 2005 16:53

Ricoh, a world leader in high speed, wide-angle compact digital cameras, further refines its technology to pack even more features into its new slimline camera. Designed to overcome the performance limitations of slimline digitals, the new generation 5-megapixel Caplio R2 incorporates advanced functions making it even easier to capture spontaneous moments.

Equipped with Ricoh’s patented pendulum lens retracting system, the Caplio R2 houses a 4.8x wide-angle optical zoom lens (28-135mm equivalent) within a 25.8mm slim, metal body. Currently there is no other digital camera as compact as the Caplio R2 with such a versatile zoom lens.

The Caplio R2 also maintains Ricoh’s unique positioning as the fastest compact digital cameras. Capturing spontaneous pictures easily and efficiently, it takes less than a second (0.86) to start up, focus and snap its subject. The camera focuses and fires in a mere 0.06 seconds and with the focus lock achieved it shoots in an almost instantaneous 0.003 of a second.

Of particular benefit to the growing share of older camera users is the Caplio R2’s large LCD screen. Dominating more than two thirds of the back of the camera is a high definition 2.5 inch LCD enabling easy viewing of images. Text and icons can be enlarged and a convenient one-touch “power” brightness mechanism adjusts the screen when viewing in either bright sunlight or low light conditions.

Equipped to accurately handle different exposure settings, the Caplio R2 features an Advanced Intelligent Auto Exposure system. When shooting in dim indoor light, the Caplio R2 automatically optimises ISO sensitivity and shutter speed to avoid the camera shake and blurring that can result when shooting at lower shutter speeds.

The Auto Bracket feature also assists in difficult lighting situations by automatically shooting three consecutive shots at different exposure levels. Together with the 5-Megapixel CCD, the Caplio R2 produces clean, high-quality images with minimal noise - even in large printed formats.

Other advanced features:
Adopting a multipoint focus system, the Caplio R2 divides the image displayed on the LCD into 15 separate zones and indicates the current focus areas. This enables the user to confirm focus accuracy before taking a picture. In macro mode, focus precision is also ensured with upgraded auto focusing technology that measures the closeness, size and contrast of the image.

The R2 also records high quality continuous AVI video with sound at a fast 30 frames per second which is limited only by the size of the SD card in use.

PictBridge compatible, images can be transferred directly from the Caplio R2 to a compliant printer via a USB cable - no need for a PC or driver. Offering exceptional value for money the Caplio R2 is also bundled with Image Mixer photo editing software.

Included in the price of the camera is a super long lasting lithium-ion battery (valued at $150) that can take up to 500 shots from one charge. Standard AA alkaline batteries that take up to 200 shots can also be used. In combination with the Caplio R2’s energy saving feature, this camera delivers efficient and optimum performance even when used over an extended period of time.

The Ricoh Caplio R2 is available from April and comes in a silver or black metal finish.
RRP: $599 inc GST.

Ricoh photographic products are sold through more than 1500 outlets nationally, including leading camera specialists and electronics retailers.
