Altech Computers is the latest distributor to set up shop in WA, opening for business in the Perth suburb of Osborne Park on April 4.
The distributor's national marketing manager, Safa Joumaa, said the move west was inevitable after seven years of servicing the east coast. The 1200sqm site has an initial staff of five but is expected to reach 15 by the end of the month, he said.
"We have had customers in WA for a long time and we really need to give them some face-to-face support," he said. "There is also quite a lot of growth for us in that market and, now that we have the office in place, we are expecting a 60 per cent increase in sales this year."
Altech's move into Perth comes less than two months after Bluechip Infotech opened a site in the same suburb. But Joumaa said his company's move was not related.
With Altech's Melbourne office able to serve the South Australian and Tasmanian markets - and its Queensland operations able to service the Northern Territory - further office openings in Australia were unlikely, Joumaa said. However, a move across the Tasman was on the cards.
"New Zealand is a growing market," he said. "We have tried working with sub-distributors in the past but that has not worked out. In the next year or so we will look to have our own office out there."
Only last week, Syynex Australia announced it would open an office in New Zealand within weeks after failing to find a suitable local player for a joint venture.
