Sun Java Enterprise System and PureMessage deliver comprehensive integrated spam and virus protection

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Sydney, 22 April 2004

Sophos, a world leader in anti-virus and anti-spam solutions, and Sun Microsystems, Inc. (Nasdaq: SUNW), has announced the integration between Sophos PureMessage and the Java(TM) System Messaging Server, a key component of the Sun Java(TM) Enterprise System. Available today from Sophos, this new PureMessage module enables an integrated solution to protect against spam, viruses and other security threats for high-volume messaging environments such as telecommunication carriers, universities and large enterprises.

"Given the business-critical nature of e-mail, organisations must develop a comprehensive approach to mail hygiene and message control, while also ensuring compliance with internal and federal communication policies and regulations," said Matt Cain, vice president with analyst firm META Group's Technology Research Services. "Ideally, they should choose a solution that provides multiple areas of protection at the server or gateway level. This type of approach to e-mail management creates procurement, operational and functional efficiencies and results in the lowest TCO for large organisations."

Large organisations must address e-mail-borne security without introducing another layer of management complexity or a new communication bottleneck to their network. The integrated Sophos and Sun solution enables the Java Enterprise System to communicate directly with PureMessage via channel architecture in the Java System Messaging Server. This provides customers with high performance message processing and consolidated protection, through a seamless administrative experience, without requiring a third-party Message Transfer Agent to broker the communication. Organisations can get up-to-date protection against messaging threats using one of the fastest, most comprehensive and easy-to-deploy solutions on the market.

"Deploying systems with scalability and high availability services capable of delivering millions of e-mail messages per day, while simultaneously helping to protect users from unwanted spam and viruses enables organisations to realise the full potential of their messaging and collaboration systems," said Patrick Dorsey, marketing director, Communication and Collaboration Products for Sun Microsystems. "This new solution from Sun and Sophos further enhances the proven scalability and content filtering capabilities of the Java Enterprise System enabling enterprises and ISPs alike to increase user productivity through the reduction of spam in their inbox."

As a critical component of the Java Enterprise System, the Java System Messaging Server is the market leading platform in the ISP market with more than 220 million licenses sold and provides a high-performance, highly secure messaging offering. Scaling from thousands to millions of users, it is integrated with the Java System Calendar Server and Java system Instant Messaging software and is ideal for service providers, enterprises, academic institutions and government agencies that want to consolidate messaging servers and reduce the total cost of ownership of their messaging and collaboration infrastructure.

"Sophos customers have come to expect the highest level of e-mail-borne threat protection, including scalability that meets the demands of the highest-volume messaging environments," said Shawn Thomas, director of market development for Sophos. "The combination of Sophos PureMessage with the Java Enterprise System high-volume messaging component provides greater infrastructure choice to our largest customer environments."

The Java Enterprise System provides extensive security features that help ensure the integrity of communications through user authentication, session encryption, and content filtering to help prevent spam and viruses so enterprises and service providers can provide secure, reliable messaging services for entire communities of employees, partners, students, faculty and customers.

Sophos PureMessage protects organisations against viruses, spam and other e-mail-borne security threats. Combining industry-leading anti-virus and anti-spam technologies with flexible policy management and world-class support, PureMessage is the most comprehensive, flexible and mature mail filtering solution for businesses.

Protecting against network downtime, productivity loss, and vulnerability of informational assets, PureMessage safely removes up to 98 per cent of spam at the gateway, using the latest anti-spam techniques. Quarantine digests enable end-users to easily access blocked messages, eliminating the business impact of false positives. Industry-leading virus detection tools scan for known and unknown viruses, protecting the network against malicious code. Corporate communications policies are easily enforced using PureMessage's flexible policy manager for complete, precise control over mail filtering.
