Hitachi Global Storage Technologies has announced the 400GB Deskstar 7K400. The new drive has been designed for AV and ATA nearline environments, where large capacities and a lower per-gigabyte cost are key requirements. The product is among the first to include a new industry-standard AV feature known as streaming command set. This feature is designed to enhance streaming functionality in digital video applications and increase the drive’s capacity for storing and retrieving digital video content on a DVR. The Deskstar 7K400 provides enough capacity to store 400 hours of standard TV programming, 45 hours of HDTV programming, or more than 6500 hours of high quality digital music. The new drives will ship with Parallel ATA and Serial ATA (SATA) interfaces and a scalable interface technology. Other features include a new anti-rebound actuator latch and rotational vibration safeguard technology (RVS), a spindle motor that is used in enterprise-class hard drives, an 8MB-buffer and a three-year warranty. Hitachi is currently shipping Deskstar 7K400 drives in limited quantities. RRP: To be announced.
