CeBIT: German firm sets new chapter for shopfront software

A German software company will begin its bid to make inroads into the Australian eBusiness shopfront space with the official sales launch of its online shop at the CeBIT tradeshow this week.

epages Software has been developing payment software, mainly for European customers, for a decade. However, the company’s flagship product epages, will now make its Australian sales launch thanks to an arrangement with its Australian master distributor, eCorner.

epages is an out of the box shopfront application for business that wish to enable online transactions on their existing Web sites. Customising the application to a businesses specific needs is a simple process as it uses pre-defined templates. All the products added to the epages application are searchable thanks to a built-in Sybase Adaptive Enterprise Server Data Base.

epages comes in several flavours: epages Community, Hosting and Merchant version.

The hosting and community versions is designed for deployment by hosting providers and large telcos and ISPs. These organisations would buy (around $40,000) or rent (around $800 per month) epages from eCorner and then offer it to small businesses or any bricks and mortar shop that wishes to sell online.

In the community and hosting package, an ISP, for example, would buy the application and then on-sell epages to its customers.

Essentially, epages becomes an additional service by the ISP to the customer. The ISP customers would rent the application at a small monthly price, usually starting from $20. This depends on what the ISP or telco's charge for the service.

Another way eCorner is pitching the product is to pick up the epages product via a bundled solution where the ISP/telco will provide a broadband connection as well as the epages product. This is targeted at small to medium sized business that might not not have a fixed line Internet connection.

Pricing for this method is varied.

“The list price per store will depend on the hosting provider; however an indicative package, including hosting, broadband, epages and support would start as low as $180 - $200 per month,” CEO of eCorner, John Debrincat, said.

The epages Merchant Edition, which is targeted at large retailers, has a purchase price per licence of $9647. Current customers include Weight Watchers and Dick Smith Electronics.
