Australia's WLAN Momentum Builds But Hotspot Remains "Cold" Finds IDC

 • 03 May, 2004 11:10

NORTH SYDNEY, May 3rd, 2004 – Momentum in the Australian wireless LAN (WLAN) market continued to build up from all quarters last year, with the IEEE approval of 802.11g resulting in a dramatic rise of the new standard. IDC's latest study, titled "Australian Wireless LAN and Hotspot 2004-2008 Forecast and Analysis: Cutting the Cord!" reveals that Cisco Systems remained the undisputed leader in the WLAN equipment market worth A$43 million last year.

"WLAN is no longer a pastime of the IT department. About one-fifth of Australian businesses already have WLAN within their organisations and that usage is spilling onto public areas," observes Warren Chaisatien, IDC Australia's Senior Analyst for Mobile & Wireless Solutions.

"Nonetheless, the hotspot market remains nascent with service providers still largely operating in the 'land grab' mode and very little revenue to go around. Coverage, pricing, roaming and billing issues as well as security concerns have been identified as inhibitors to adoption of public WLAN service,” added Mr Chaisatien,

The proliferation of WiFi-ready devices, the move by businesses to embrace enterprise mobility and by consumers to embrace the digital home concept, coupled with falling prices of WLAN gear and broadband connections, will keep Australian WLAN market momentum going. IDC believes cellular carriers can best take advantage of WLAN and hotspot market opportunities by assisting companies with corporate WLAN initiatives and offering hotspot as a complementary service, while DSL and cable modem service providers can bundle hotspot with their consumer high-speed Internet access offerings.

The study presents IDC's sizing and forecast of the Australian WLAN hardware market, a snapshot of current and planned enterprise WLAN and hotspot use based on an end-user survey conducted earlier this year, and brief profiles of major hotspot service provides and their location shares as of the first quarter of 2004. It also provides IDC's first-ever five-year forecast of Australia's hotspot market in terms of locations, users and service revenue – and discussion on potential developments in the WLAN, hotspot and related markets.
