• 02 December, 2003 16:01

Strategic alliance includes joint development, sales, support and marketing.

Sydney – December 2nd 2003.

Network Appliance, Inc. (NASDAQ: NTAP), a leading provider of enterprise network storage solutions and VERITAS Software (NASDAQ: VRTS), the leading storage software provider, announced today their creation of integrated solutions for data lifecycle management, regulatory compliance and disk-based data protection, expanding each company’s current solutions portfolios in these arenas. In addition, NetApp will now resell certain VERITAS software products as part of these fully integrated solutions, building on the two companies’ joint product development and go-to-market programs previewed on August 12th, 2003.

“VERITAS and NetApp are bringing together the industry’s leading storage infrastructure and storage management products into seamless, integrated solutions for our mutual customers,” said Rob Soderbery, vice president of Business Development, VERITAS Software. “We look forward to continuing our close collaboration with NetApp on product development, joint marketing and sales. Together, we will be driving the future of disk-based data protection and the realisation of true enterprise-wide data lifecycle management.”

Commenting on the expanded alliance, Simon Green, Australia and New Zealand Managing Director for Network Appliance, said, “Together, NetApp and VERITAS will deliver advanced enterprise solutions that further address and anticipate critical customer needs around data protection, data lifecycle management and regulatory compliance.

“The continued creation of robust solutions will help our customers gain greater value from their storage infrastructures, while saving on their total cost of ownership,” he said.

“IT professionals continue to look for new ways to leverage more value from their storage infrastructures – especially in these financially tight and complex times,” said Jamie Gruener, senior analyst, The Yankee Group. “Vendors who are able to offer simple and seamlessly integrated solutions provide the greatest return on investment and lowest total cost of ownership for customers. Together, the collaborative strategies of Network Appliance and VERITAS help accomplish these tasks.”

Network Appliance and VERITAS Integrated Solutions --
NetApp and VERITAS today unveiled the first integrated offerings on the companies’ roadmap for data lifecycle management, regulatory compliance, and disk-based data protection solutions. This roadmap expands on each company’s current portfolio in these arenas.

Data Lifecycle Management and Regulatory Compliance --
The two companies plan to integrate VERITAS Data Lifecycle Manager with NetApp enterprise storage systems to manage data from creation to end of life. The solution will enable policy-based data migration and archiving between NetApp FAS systems and heterogeneous servers, which are connected to NetApp NearStore® systems, providing complete data lifecycle management for Data ONTAP™, Windows®, UNIX®, and Linux® host systems. The NetApp/VERITAS solution is designed to protect, archive, organise and manage data across heterogeneous infrastructures, allowing organisations to efficiently leverage multiple classes of storage.

Co-developed integration optimises backup and restore operations and provides transparency for end-users and applications. VERITAS Data Lifecycle Manager also indexes the content of managed data, providing end-users, administrators and auditors an enterprise-wide search capability to help dramatically reduce the time and cost of e-discovery and retrieval. The solution reduces customers’ total cost of ownership in data management by improving hardware utilisation, eliminating unnecessary redundancy and improving management efficiency.

A key feature of the joint solution is integration between NetApp SnapLock™ software and VERITAS Data Lifecycle Manager, allowing users to implement retention policies on their data to guarantee its integrity and automatically retain it on appropriate media until no longer required by the end-user or enterprise. This SnapLock capability to enable write-once (non-erasable, non-rewritable) disk-based storage allows data to be archived for regulatory compliance.

Disk-Based Data Protection --
The two companies plan to integrate the industry-leading VERITAS NetBackup software(i) from VERITAS with the NetApp NearStore ATA-based storage system to offer customers a unified solution for disk-based data protection in both NetApp and heterogeneous systems environments. VERITAS NetBackup software will provide a single management interface for heterogeneous disk-to-disk-to-tape protection, which includes NetApp SnapVault™ software for filer-to-filer protection and NetApp NearStore Windows for disk-based backup and recovery of Windows and UNIX host systems and applications.

This combination delivers a unified architecture for disk-to-disk-to-tape protection across NetApp, Windows and UNIX host environments. Customers can dramatically reduce their backup and restore times with disk-based protection, while still retaining data on tape for long-term archival and disaster recovery.

Integration between NetApp Snapshot capabilities with VERITAS NetBackup Advanced Client and Oracle® Agent will allow for high-performance, online disk-based backup of Oracle databases running on NetApp storage systems.

Pricing and Availability for Integrated Solutions --
The VERITAS Data Lifecycle Manager/NetApp SnapLock solution is scheduled to be available in the first quarter of calendar year 2004. The VERITAS NetBackup/NetApp SnapVault enterprise solution is scheduled to be available in the second half of calendar year 2004. Pricing on the solutions will be set as they become available.

Additional Reseller Information --
Network Appliance will resell the VERITAS Data Lifecycle Manager and VERITAS NetBackup product as part of the integrated solutions outlined above. This additional go-to-market channel gives customers the ultimate flexibility in procuring NetApp/VERITAS integrated solutions. The companies will work cooperatively to service and support customers to ensure successful implementation of the new joint solutions.
