VERITAS Software Used by Microsoft to Protect Critical Data

Industry leaders serve as both technology partners and mutual customers

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. – September 10, 2004 – VERITAS Software Corporation (Nasdaq: VRTS) today announced that Microsoft Corporation has successfully completed the VERITAS beta program for the next release of VERITAS Backup Exec™ for Windows Servers, leading backup and restore software for Windows environments. As the creator of Windows, Microsoft is not only a key industry partner, but also a customer, having standardized on VERITAS for data protection since 1999. Today, Microsoft efficiently protects and manages hundreds of terabytes of critical data with VERITAS Backup Exec software.

As part of a robust beta program to test and ensure that Backup Exec software meets and exceeds the needs of VERITAS customers, Microsoft tested new functionality including simplified, centralized monitoring and management for distributed backup servers and remote offices. The improved ability to manage distributed backup servers is key, as Microsoft continues to face exponential data growth as the company with the world’s largest deployment of Windows. With VERITAS Backup Exec software, Microsoft protects its internal IT, Exchange Server 2003, Microsoft SQL Server 2000 and Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2003.

“At Microsoft, we use Backup Exec for our worldwide production servers primarily to gain enterprise scalability and the ability to easily backup our data for offsite archive and protection,” said John Overholt, director, ITG Enterprise Storage Services, Microsoft Corporation. “We are particularly excited to see the rich features and functionality coming in the next release of Backup Exec software.”

“Obviously, this is quite a testament to how well VERITAS’ Backup Exec solution supports Microsoft environments,” said Nancy Hurley, senior analyst, Enterprise Strategy Group. “Microsoft's use of Backup Exec for their production servers is an absolute validation for any users questioning the functionality and level of support that VERITAS can provide to protect data in a Windows environment.”

Innovation Integration
Building on a decade-long technology partnership, VERITAS has innovated alongside Microsoft to develop key components and applets included in the major releases of Windows NT, Windows 2000, Windows Server 2003, as well as Windows Storage Server 2003 and Windows Small Business Server 2003. VERITAS Backup Exec features an exclusive web-administration console snap-in where all aspects of the backup application can be controlled, greatly simplifying and automating backup operations for a number of distributed backup systems. VERITAS products continue to support the latest application programming interfaces and storage capabilities offered by Microsoft.

VERITAS Standardizes on Microsoft
VERITAS relies on Microsoft Windows-based systems to ensure that its more than 7,000 employees worldwide remain productive, standardizing on Microsoft Exchange and providing access to the most advanced suite of desktop applications -- including the Microsoft Office System.

“VERITAS is building on and extending its technology partnership with Microsoft to enable our joint customers to fully leverage the new technologies in Backup Exec,” said Bob Maness, senior director of product marketing, VERITAS Software. “Our goal is to ensure that our products are meeting the critical data availability requirements necessary for customers to deploy a utility computing environment using Windows technology.”
