ProCurve Networking by HP Launches Gigabit Switch Series that Offers Intelligence at the Network Edge

 • 04 November, 2004 10:18

High-performance switch line offers 10-Gigabit uplinks for high-bandwidth capability

ASIA PACIFIC, Singapore, Nov. 4, 2004 - ProCurve Networking by HP today introduced a line of stackable switching products designed to enable enterprises to securely deploy the ProCurve Adaptive EDGE Architecture via Gigabit Ethernet to the network edge. The switches also feature new 10-Gigabit switch modules and accessories, which combine to minimize network delay and enable users to take full advantage of desktop and notebook capacity.

The new product line continues to expand the ProCurve Adaptive EDGE Architecture, improving security and performance for customers - such as Oregon State University - who demand more business value from their networks and offering more affordable speed, performance and intelligence at the edge. The ProCurve Adaptive EDGE Architecture is the first to deliver affordable, intelligent control to the edge of a network, allowing companies to more effectively manage complex applications, including mobility, security and convergence.

"The College of Oceanic and Atmospheric Science at Oregon State University is a national leader in the study of coastal zones and ocean processes, conducting and integrating field experiments, theoretical investigations, and numerical modeling and simulations to study all aspects of ocean, land, and atmosphere processes and interactions," said Charles Sears, manager research computing, College of Oceanic and Atmospheric Science, Oregon State University.

"We use an array of extremely high performance hardware applications that incorporate video, large file storage and graphics, all of which take a toll on my network. Our High Definition (HD) Video facilities alone can drag down network performance, and thus our science tasks into the ground.

"With the optional 10-Gigabit uplink and stacking capability, I can get more from my network because the ProCurve 3400cl series switches offers me high-bandwidth capability, while future-proofing my infrastructure. This can improve my application performance and network efficiency with 10 times more speed. I know my end users and the overall company can appreciate those benefits, since it relates directly to our business' productivity."

Offering customers the flexibility of two port densities, the ProCurve Switch 3400cl series comprises 24- and 48-port 10/100/1000 intelligent EDGE stackable switches. The ProCurve Switch 3400cl-24G features 20 ports offering 10/100/1000 RJ-45 connectivity and four dual-personality ports with 10/100/1000 RJ-45 or optional Gigabit mini-GBIC slots. The ProCurve Switch 3400cl-48G features 44 ports with 10/100/1000 RJ-45 connectivity and four dual-personality ports like its 24-port sibling. Both switches offer full Layer 3 and 4 routing features, RPS (RPS 600) support, resiliency features for high-availability applications and one module slot for optional 10-GbE modules.

"Customers who demand more from their networks are choosing the ProCurve Adaptive EDGE Architecture for the choice and flexibility it brings. Our newest Gigabit offering extends that strategy, enabling increased productivity while protecting our customers' existing investments," said John McHugh, vice president and general manager, ProCurve Networking by HP. "With ProCurve, customers do not have to wait for the performance advantages of Gigabit to the edge. We are making more performance and more intelligence more affordable now."

For users with highly demanding application performance requirements, ProCurve also launched two 10-Gigabit uplink modules for use with the Switch 3400cl series. The ProCurve 10-GbE Copper Module offers two fixed CX4 ports that support CX4 cable up to 15 meters. This module can be used to stack the Switch 3400cl units and as an uplink to a core switch. It also will support optical media converters that extend the reach of 10-GbE copper up to 300 meters using standard 12 fiber MTP multimode cable. The ProCurve 10-Gig Media Flex Module features two slots for X2 type transceivers supporting the following 10-GbE standards: SR, LR, ER, and CX4.

The 3400cl series are engineered to support the fiber (802.3ae) and copper (802.3ak) 10-Gigabit Ethernet LAN industry standards. In addition, the switches offer secure network management and user access control, allowing customers to safely control, configure and update their products without the fear of unauthorized eavesdropping. Customers can realize the benefits of Gigabit connectivity with the built-in capability to instantly upgrade to 10-GbE at any time in the future.

The new Gigabit products support ProCurve's goal of delivering security and convergence support for customers. Security features including port-based access control lists, Web-based authentication, MAC lockout/MAC lockdown, and support for SSL, SSHv2, Secure FTP and SNMPv3. Convergence features include Link Layer Discovery Protocol (LLDP), Class of Service (CoS) support for DSCP, IP-Type of Service (IP TOS), TDP/UDP, IP Address and L3 protocol, as well as Traffic Prioritization in the form of 802.1p classification and Layer 4 prioritization.
