HP Makes Storage Networking Simple and Affordable for the Growing Small and Medium Business Market

SYDNEY, Australia, 9 November 2004 – Hewlett-Packard (HP) today unveiled new Storage Area Network (SAN) and Network Attached Storage (NAS) solutions for Small and Medium Businesses (SMB) that are affordable and easy to install.

HP’s latest SAN and NAS offerings are designed to address the IT and budget resource constraints of SMB customers. It is built on the HP Smart Office framework providing customers with reliable, high-quality products. This allows SMBs to spend less time worrying about technology and more time focussing on their business.

With a SAN or NAS solution, SMB customers will be able to consolidate their storage resources and simplify the way their data is managed and protected. It also allows for storage growth by providing additional capacity when the internal storage capacity of a server has been exceeded.

HP simplifies the SAN experience
The HP StorageWorks Modular Smart Array (MSA) 1000 Small Business SAN Kit provides an entry-level complete solution ideal for first-time SAN customers. The kit helps to reduce the cost, complexity and risk of SAN deployments. Customers will be able to deploy an entire SAN in less than an hour with basic technical expertise.

“HP is showcasing how affordable it is for a storage area network to be implemented and how easy it is to move from a direct-attached storage environment to a SAN with the Small Business SAN Kit,” said Mark Nielsen, Product Marketing Manager, HP Australia.

“The kit reduces the cost and complexity of SAN deployments and customers can get an entire SAN running with basic technical expertise.”

The HP StorageWorks MSA1000 Small Business SAN Kit provides a low-cost, scalable, high performance storage consolidation system with investment protection for existing users of HP servers.

Each kit includes a HP StorageWorks MSA1000, a 2-gigabyte (GB) Fibre Channel disk array with two QLogic SANblade Host Bus Adapters (HBA) and an eight-port Fibre Channel QLogic SANbox Switch. An installation CD based on the QLogic SANsurfer Small Business SAN Wizard enables customers to get the entire SAN installed and running with less than 25 mouse clicks.

The HP StorageWorks MSA1000 Small Business SAN Kit is available now with a recommended retail price of A$15,191 (including GST).

HP ProLiant Storage Servers: Lower cost, simple-to-install NAS
HP’s existing range of StorageWorks NAS offerings have been rebranded under the HP ProLiant Storage Servers family. The ProLiant Storage Servers offer a more cost-effective solution for storage expansion and are designed to do more than a general purpose server.

Products introduced with the expanded NAS offerings include the HP ProLiant ML350, ML370, DL380 Storage Servers and enhanced HP ProLiant iSCSI Feature Pack software.

The Feature Pack adds iSCSI target capability to HP Storage Server (NAS) products, enabling small and medium businesses to combine file, print, and application storage services on a single platform to manage, scale and protect. It provides investment protection by enabling low cost storage consolidation using industry standard hardware and software on existing LAN infrastructure.

It eliminates the need for a costly upgrade to Fibre Channel from Ethernet when migrating from multiple direct-attached storage devices to a consolidated network storage infrastructure.

The iSCSI Feature Pack includes the new HP ProLiant Application Storage Manager software to simplify the hosting and management of Microsoft Exchange storage on HP ProLiant Storage Servers. The software automates the configuration process and provides administrators with a single point of management for monitoring and allocating e-mail storage capacity.

Two new HP ProLiant Storage Server 5U tower models include up to 1.8 terabytes (TB) of internal SCSI storage and support for HP iSCSI Feature Pack software to enable the hosting of file, print and block storage services on a single platform:

• HP ProLiant ML350 G4 Storage Server – Along with a base model, customers can select a model with 1.2TB of user storage featuring four 300 GB SCSI drives. Remote management is optional.
• HP ProLiant ML370 G4 Storage Server – Features either a single- or dual-processor and includes Standard LightsOut support for remote management as well as an upgraded Smart Array controller for expandability beyond the internal storage capacity.

A 2U rack-mounted model, the HP ProLiant DL380 G4 Storage Server is available in multiple variations including a gateway model for NAS/SAN fusion. This device offers quick and simple network storage with the flexibility of multi-protocol file support and scalability up to 48TB.
