Establishes strong lead in iSCSI, maintains leadership position in NAS for CY2003

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Sydney - March 10th, 2004

Network Appliance, Inc. (NASDAQ: NTAP) has announced that it has established a lead in the emerging iSCSI storage market for calendar year 2003. According to IDC's Worldwide Disk Storage Systems Quarterly Tracker, Network Appliance had the highest penetration of the iSCSI disk storage system market, as measured by both market share in factory revenue and the number of terabytes shipped. In addition, NetApp retained its leadership position in network-attached storage (NAS) hardware for calendar year 2003 in both revenue and terabytes shipped.*

The results validate the early leadership position Network Appliance carved by offering iSCSI protocol support on its storage systems and the company's continued focus to broaden its overall market reach and execute a winning storage strategy that solves customer challenges in storage consolidation, business continuance, data protection, disaster recovery and archive and reference needs.

"We are proud of our ongoing market leadership in NAS and our very strong iSCSI position," said Mark Santora, senior vice president of marketing at Network Appliance. "Customers today are making purchase decisions based on simplicity and application requirements. That is why we deliver unified storage solutions that handle many types of storage deployments, are simple to deploy and manage and combine powerful software into robust systems. It is this winning combination that distinguishes NetApp in the storage market and fuels our continued market leadership by focusing on our customers' success."

iSCSI is particularly appealing for distributed storage environments where price/performance is a top-of-mind concern. Based on standard IP protocols, iSCSI systems are simple and economical to deploy. iSCSI solutions enable IT managers to consolidate and centralise storage management of widespread storage pools in workgroup and/or departmental configurations and to enjoy the benefits of networked storage in broader reaches of today's data-intensive enterprise.

iSCSI is also particularly suited for Microsoft applications such as Exchange and SQL Server. The majority of Microsoft server applications today are deployed with direct-attached storage. The availability of a native iSCSI software initiator from Microsoft provides customers with a simple, cost-effective way to consolidate and centrally manage that data. The NetApp(r) FAS960, FAS960C, FAS940, FAS940C, F825, F825C, FAS250 and the NearStore(r) R150 storage appliances have completed the Designed for Windows Logo testing for iSCSI hardware targets. The Microsoft Windows Server Catalog identifies products that have been designed and tested to receive the "Designed for Windows" logo. The logo ensures the product meets Microsoft standards for iSCSI compatibility and interoperability with the Windows(r) platform.
