In the All-Important SME Space IDC Finds the Channel is Key and Mobility is Growing

<p>NORTH SYDNEY, March 8th, 2004 – IDC has recently completed a study of the local SME market titled, “Australian SME Buying Behaviour: Desktop and Mobile PCs”. This report focuses on the buying environment, dynamics, future intentions and trends of the SME market in Australia. IDC’s key findings were that mobile products are expected to continue growing over the course of 2004 and the channel remains an essential part in the purchasing decisions of Australian SMEs for PCs.</p>
<p>The strong economy has helped to increase SME purchasing, and the post Y2K PC refresh will continue to push up the market in 2004. IDC has found that these refreshes are moving increasingly towards the mobile form factor. Sectors such as banking, insurance finance and education are pegged to be some of the strongest areas of growth in mobility over the next 12 months.</p>
<p>The expected lifecycle of personal computers in small and medium businesses appears to be getting longer. Results from 2003 show an increase on the past three years to a lifecycle of 3.47 years, and this figure gets higher as the business size decreases.</p>
<p>"There is an opportunity for technology providers to educate smaller businesses about advanced solutions that can enhance business efficiencies within their organisations, and mobility is one such opportunity"</p>
<p>"Small and Medium businesses need to feel comfortable adopting new technology, and vendors should be specifically focusing on making these transitions as simple and straight forward as possible,” said IDC Market Analyst, Brad Hill.</p>
<p>From a personal computing perspective PC Analyst Michael Sager said, “The current environment for hardware spending in the SME space in Australia is buoyed by a few key factors. Firstly, the post Y2K refresh that occurred within large enterprises has been delayed across the SME market. In the SME space, devices are refreshed at slower rates and are not entirely dependent on OS and platform changes.”</p>
<p>“The SME market is also becoming a new growth sector for PCs within Australia and vendors and their channel partners alike have recognised the need to address this segment,” added Mr Sager.</p>
