New Head For Motorola’s Asian Wireless Network Operations To Build On Strong Performance

<p>Sydney, 2 March 2004 – Motorola (NYSE: MOT), a global leader in integrated communications, has appointed John Edwards as vice president and general manager, Asia for the Global Telecom Solutions Sector (GTSS).</p>
<p>Mr Edwards’ team will work with telecoms operators to build and further develop their network and services infrastructures, with strong emphasis on the emerging needs of their customers. A key priority will be to position operators to take advantage of the integration of mobile and broadband technologies.</p>
<p>GTSS is the preferred network partner of operators in Asia and the number one provider in high growth markets. It leads the network markets in Malaysia and Vietnam and is a front runner in Indonesia and Thailand. Additionally, Motorola’s experience includes the world’s most successful implementation of 3G with KDDI, which has quickly built a base of 10 million mobile phone users within 16 months. It is also a leading network provider in China and India.</p>
<p>Mr Edwards will bring his extensive background as a management consultant to telecoms operators to this new role. “In the current environment, operators are looking for partners who can work closely with them to maximise returns from their existing network and infrastructure investments, as well as provide rapid return from new technology investments,” said Mr Edwards, who previously held the post of vice president and general manager of Motorola Professional Services.</p>
<p>“We have the experience, the insights and the technology to steer operators through many of the complex challenges they face in terms of launching new services, while maximising returns from existing users,” he said.</p>
<p>As head of GTSS Asia (excluding China, Japan and India), Mr Edwards will be in charge of operations in vital East Asian markets including Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, and Vietnam, as well as Australia and New Zealand.</p>
<p>Announcing the appointment, Simon Leung, Senior Vice President, Motorola, Inc. and General Manager, Global Telecom Solutions Sector Asia Pacific, said Mr Edwards would provide deep experience and solid guidance for Motorola’s partners in building their businesses.</p>
<p>“These are exciting and challenging times. The industry is readying itself for the upgrade to 3G, even 4G, mobile services and beyond but at the same time uncertain demand from users for the new technology has been restraining operators’ development plans,” said Mr Leung. “Now, after a period of restraint we believe the industry is poised for a modest return to growth. Motorola has the solutions to work with network operators. John and the rest of our team will work with our partners to develop technical road maps and telecoms models to meet these challenges as well as to seize the significant opportunities in the medium and longer-term.”</p>
<p>“John will be building on the successes achieved in Asia in recent years, which have played a significant part in GTSS’ profitable operations globally,” said Mr Leung.</p>
<p>In his new role, Mr Edwards will further build on his work at the cutting edge of the convergence of wireless and broadband, so that operators can harness the benefits of the fusion of the two technologies.</p>
<p>Prior to joining Motorola, Mr Edwards was chief executive officer, Asia Pacific, for Cap Gemini Ernst &amp; Young’s Telecom Media Networks company and was partner in charge of Ernst &amp; Young’s Asia Pacific Technology, Communications and Entertainment Sector Consulting Services. His clients have included major carriers and suppliers including leading players in the Asia Pacific region such as Telstra Corporation, TCNZ, AT&amp;T, British Telecom, Cable &amp; Wireless, PCCW , StarHub, Maxis, Telekom Malaysia, SingTel, Fujitsu, Cisco Systems, Digital Equipment, and Samsung.
