WatchGuard announces new MD, new Firebox product

Security appliance vendor WatchGuard Technologies has appointed Jeff Hurmuses as managing director of the Asia-Pacific region. The announcement comes hot on the heels of the global launch of Watchguard’s new generation Firebox X appliance.

Hurmuses joins Watchguard from Hong Kong-based Intandem Asia, which he co-founded in 2002 to help US technology companies enter Asia-Pacific markets.

Reporting directly to WatchGuard’s senior vice president of worldwide sales, Dale Bastian, Hurmuses will bring to the table more than 25 years of experience in corporate business and IT management, and business development expertise in the Asia-Pacific region.

The appointment came days after WatchGuard launched its latest expandable multifunction security appliances.

Dubbed Firebox X, the family of devices based on Intel technology combines VPN, firewall, application layer security, intrusion prevention, authentication, and spam and Web filtering in a single 1U enclosure. Firebox X replaces WatchGuard's line of fixed configuration boxes.

Utilising proxies created for various protocols including HTTP, FTP, SMTP and DNS to detect anomalies, WatchGuard executives said the appliance assists in preventing and blocking attacks created to exploit said protocols.

Watchguard's security product portfolio is specifically targeted at the SME sector. Subsequently, channel partners are critical to Watchguard’s got-to-market strategy, said managing director of Watchguard Australia/NZ, Moheb Moses.

Moses said the five-in-one appliance is ideal for SMEs that don’t have the time or the budget to handle five different security layers from five different vendors.

“SMEs can’t afford to be constantly replacing hardware as their performance and capacity requirements increase in line with their growing businesses. The expandability of the product makes it a real value proposition for them.

“Customers can activate security features such as content filtering and antivirus protection on the same appliance through a licence key."

All four of the Firebox X models are available immediately through distributors Firewall Systems, Ingram Micro and LAN Systems. Prices range from $3150 to $7850.
