USB peripherals specialist, Comsol, has released a dinky little storage device which allows the secure partitioning of up to 4GB of a hard disk drive. The USB Virtual HDD Key is ideal for storing sensitive material on the computer. The key can support a 2GB partition on the Windows 98, 98SE and ME operating systems and a maximum of 4GB on Windows 2000 or XP. According to Comsol, the virtual drive can be partitioned for any size and format including FAT/FAT16/FAT32 and NTFS. Essentially, the key’s software creates an image file in the partitioned virtual drive. This is hidden automatically and cannot be accessed, deleted or modified without the key. When the key is removed, the invisible section of the HDD does not even show on the device manager. With the majority of motherboards, the key also offers an optional PC-Lock function which prevents any unauthorised use of any part of the computer. Fully USB 1.1 compliant, the Virtual HDD Key requires no external power supply. The USB Virtual HDD Key is available through Comsol.
