Apple Computer has surprised observers by posting a larger-than- expected profit for the second fiscal quarter.
The company has announced a profit of $US55 million on revenues of $US1.4 billion. The same quarter last year generated revenues of $US1.6 billion, but a loss of $US708 million.
While most observers had not expected Apple to repeat its first quarter performance (a profit of $US47 million), the company attributed its continuing profitability to stronger-than-expected sales of its high-margin Power Macintosh G3 computers and "disciplined expense controls".
The G3 computers accounted for 51 per cent of total units sold.
