EMC rolls out ILM wares

EMC Corp. bolstered critical parts of its information lifecycle management line Monday with the release of database-archiving software and a set of storage services intended to help customers put in ILM hierarchies.

The company at Oracle AppsWorld announced the EMC DatabaseXtender suite of software that gives IT managers the ability to monitor database growth and usage and migrate inactive data to different storage tiers.

EMC acquired DatabaseXtender through an OEM agreement with Outerbay technologies. The value of database data, also call structured data, changes over time. Data no longer accessed can be migrated to less expensive secondary storage as needs change, based on policies and rules the IT manager sets.

The DatabaseXtender suite consists of several products:

- DatabaseXtender Analyzer, which monitors and analyzes growth patterns and the performance of database applications

- DatabaseXtender Optimizer, which identifies and relocates inactive data

- DatabaseXtender Archiver, which archives old data to ATA-based storage, content-addressable storage or tape

- DatabaseXtender Subsetter, which creates copies of products databases for testing, development or data mining

For the time being, EMC's DatabaseXtender will support Oracle. Versions for Sybase, DB2 and PeopleSoft on Oracle are also planned. The products compete with Princeton-Softech's Active Archiving software, which Network Appliance added this week to its ILM portfolio.

DatabaseXtender Analyzer, Optimizer and Subsetter are available now. Archiver is scheduled to ship mid-year. EMC did not reveal prices.

EMC also announced a set of professional services to help IT managers plan, build and organize ILM projects within their organizations. The company will offer ILM workshops to accustom users to ILM principles; assessment services, to look at storage and data companies already have; and storage management services, to give companies service-level-driven, on-site storage management.
