Optus launches Australia's first mobile phone TV

Optus Mobile has launched a television streaming service which offers retransmission of the ABC, SBS and CNN’s international service as part of Optus’ range of mobile services titled, Optus Zoo.

The television streaming services will be available over the latest range of handsets on the market including the Nokia 3650, 3660 and 6600, Nokia N-Gage and PDAs such as the O2 XDA.

Other Zoo content and services will be accessible over most data-capable handsets.

The streaming is available on a trial period until March 31, 2003.

If the response is successful, then Optus would decide whether to launch it commercially, an Optus spokesperson said.

The move seems to be a way of creating more revenue from its existing mobile customers.

Optus achieved a 21 per cent increase in first quarter sales (to $843 million) to September, 2003.

Managing director of Optus Mobile, Allen Lew, said there were times when it would be convenient to watch the evening news bulletin or watch your favourite program on the run.

“Armed with the latest mobile phones, our customers will be able to view live TV programs and access a wealth of other entertainment, information and mobile content via Optus Zoo,” he said.

Optus had launched Zoo to ensure that customers had access to the majority of services without needing customised handsets. Zoo offers a feature that automatically personalises the menu system in accordance with customers' preferences, removing the need to search through endless lists of options.

The telco is currently in talks with Australian commercial networks, but would not disclose any information regarding a future service in conjunction with them.

Zoo content and services are available now.

Optus’ standard WAP and GPRS prices apply.

Viewing television over the mobile is free during the trial period on handsets supporting video streaming.
