Acterna Expands Industry’s Most Flexible and Scalable Optical Tester to Further Increase Productivity of Field Technicians

<p>Taipei, Taiwan and Hong Kong: August 26 2004 -- Acterna today announced the latest additions to MTS-8000 field optical tester line. Designed for field use in both outside plant and central office applications, the Acterna MTS-8000 is the industry’s most compact and cost-effective solution for optical network testing. Acterna will display the tester’s new capabilities at Taipei Telecom 04, from August 26th to 29th at booth #A1106.</p>
<p>Enhancements to the Acterna MTS-8000 tester were based on extensive input gathered from field technicians, service carriers and equipment manufacturers worldwide. The MTS-8000 is easy to use for all field technicians and serves as a complete fiber characterization and WDM solution with a full range of test capabilities.</p>

Plus, procurement costs are reduced and network deployment enabled thanks to the MTS-8000’s compatibility with over 10,000 previous-generation MTS testers presently deployed in the field."</p>
<p>New OSA Test Capabilities</p>
<p>The MTS-8000 is now enabled with a high-performance full-spectrum (1250-1650nm) optical spectrum analyzer (OSA) module, which is essential for measuring optical parameters and for extracting single optical channels out of a CWDM or DWDM signal for further analysis. The OSA module provides enhanced troubleshooting with a 10.7Gbit/s channel isolator option as well as reduced service and calibration costs due to a lifetime guarantee on wavelength accuracy (provided by an Acterna patent).</p>
<p>Also included with the OSA module:
- automatic DWDM channel analysis to ITU standards (with a 'pass/fail' display) for DWDM system turn-up,
- a channel isolation option for troubleshooting DWDM systems with a separate SDH/SONET or Q-Factor tester,
- a dual channel OSA option for testing of OADM and OAXC systems, and
- a simple web-based remote access function.</p>
<p>New PMD Measurement Capabilities</p>
<p>Acterna’s polarization mode dispersion (PMD) module for the MTS-8000 combines PMD, spectral attenuation, and DWDM channel measurements in one module, reducing cost and the number of instruments needed to deploy in the field. PMD occurs in single-mode fiber due to a lack of perfect symmetry in the fiber and from external pressures on the cable. The PMD module covers all PMD test needs, providing PMD performance evaluation during installation and system upgrade, troubleshooting legacy fibers before system upgrade, and verifying PMD of newly spliced sections of fiber during fault restoration of a high-speed system. This module must be combined with the Acterna OBS-15 light source and the Acterna OVP-15 polarizer to enable the unit to perform full PMD measurements.</p>
<p>New OTDR Test Solution</p>
<p>An optical time domain reflectometer (OTDR) is a test instrument that analyzes the light loss in an optical fiber by sending out a light pulse and measuring its reflection. OTDRs can measure fiber lines that are longer than 150 miles. The OTDR module for the Acterna T- MTS-8000 provides multimode and single mode tests based on one-, two-, three-, and four-wavelength options. The OTDR module enables the /MTS-8000 to test for system length, event loss, event reflectance, distance to events, loss rate of the fiber, total link loss, sectional ORL, and total ORL, all with a simple “Pass/Fail” display.</p>
<p>New Connection Check Functions</p>
<p>Rounding out the new features for the MTS-8000 is an all-in-one connection check add-on that provides options for video microscope, power meter, visual fault locator (VFL) and talk set connections. The connection check device’s easy, one-button operation allows multi-tasking of various functions, including a quick jumper/patchcord check for VFL, power-level management with an optical power meter, a connection quality check via a fiber inspection scope, and a built-in talk set that allows communication along the fiber with first-to-market data transfer. The multi-tasking feature also provides a continuous running function that allows for an immediate connection check.</p>
