Intrinsic vertical market knowledge yields big rewards

Intrinsic Solutions has the two powerhouses of the fast food industry as clients now that Tricon - the owner of Pizza Hut and KFC - has signed on for its Infinium payroll package.

Ironically, Tricon found out about the package from its biggest competitor, McDonald's.

"The lady who is now payroll manager for Tricon, Siobhan McGlinchey, used to work for McDonald's which was one of our clients using the Infinium package," Neill Hills-Johnes, managing director of Intrinsic Solutions, said. "She'd been happy with the system and so when she joined Tricon and wanted to make changes, she turned to us."

Hills-Johnes admits the product was a "pretty easy sell" because of Intrinsic's prior relationship with McDonald's. "With our experience in the industry, we basically just needed to take it to Tricon's management and, because of McDonald's' satisfaction with the product and the similarity in the way the two companies operate, it was easy for them to compare it to the other products they were considering."

According to Tricon's McGlinchey, a key advantage of Infinium is its ability to handle the idiosyncrasies of staff rostering in the fast food industry.

"Our payroll is extremely complex," McGlinchey said.

"Apart from having to pay 17,000 employees each week, most of our restaurant staff receive different pay rates depending on whether they work part time or casually, how old they are, whether they are working on a weekday or weekend and how much overtime they do.

"We looked at a lot of vendors but Infinium Software was best suited to our needs. All the other systems we considered met some, but not all of our needs, or required manual intervention."

Just as importantly, the deal was won because of the stability of the AS/400 platform on which the system runs, McGlinchey claims.

"The software runs on IBM AS/400 which is an extremely reliable and stable platform," she said. "This was critical for our business given that 17,000 people's pay cheques are affected if the system falls down.

"Implementing on AS/400 also enabled the fast deployment of the solution."

The first phase of the Tricon deployment was completed by Intrinsic in December last year. The second wave of the project is scheduled for completion next week.

It involves the implementation of the Opus One time and attendance system, another product for which Intrinsic is an exclusive reseller.

It will interface with the Infinium Human Resources Payroll system.
