Veritas to buy Ejasent for US$59 million

Storage software maker Veritas Software Corp. has agreed to acquire application virtualization technology developer Ejasent Inc. for US$59 million in cash, Veritas said Wednesday.

Ejasent's principal product is UpScale, a tool that creates a layer between applications and their underlying infrastructure, allowing software to be managed across a pool of servers. UpScale can be used for shifting applications between servers without shutting down the applications, a technology intended to make upgrades and maintenance faster and cheaper.

Veritas plans to sell UpScale both as a standalone product and as part of its integrated software suite. Pricing will be determined closer to the software's planned second-quarter release from Veritas, a Veritas spokesman said. UpScale will be initially available on Solaris, with a Linux version scheduled for release in early 2005.

Veritas will also add to its portfolio Ejasent's MicroMeasure application for usage-based tracking of server, storage and application operations. Veritas plans to incorporate the MicroMeasure technology into its CommandCentral Service management software.

Veritas cast the Ejasent acquisition as a step toward realizing its vision of utility computing, an oft-touted goal of many vendors promising their customers technology for flexible and less-expensive data center management.

Both Veritas and Ejasent are based in Mountain View, California. Ejasent currently has about 20 employees. Most of the research and development team is expected to join Veritas, including Ejasent founder and Chief Technology Officer Rajeev Bharadhwaj. Other members of Ejasent's executive team will depart, including its chief executive officer, chief financial officer and vice president of sales.

Founded in 1999, Ejasent is a privately held company backed by several venture capital firms. Veritas expects the acquisition to be completed this month.
