Linux enters Novell's Nterprise

Novell on Wednesday announced that its networking services have now been ported to the Linux platform.

Novell Nterprise Linux Services 1.0 will be available to Australian users on Monday, December 22. It will be supported on SuSE Enterprise Server and Red Hat Enterprise Linux distributions.

Key products in the package include Novell's file (iFolder), print (iPrint), messaging (NetMail), directory (eDirectory), and management services (iManager ).

The Nterprise Linux Services product was first announced at Novell's BrainShare user conference in Salt Lake City, US, in April when Novell pledged its support towards Linux.

Existing NetWare 6.5 users are already familiar with the products in the Nterprise range.

According to Novell Australia's managing director David Lenz, Novell customers with NetWare upgrade protection or those who have maintenance agreements with Novell will receive Nterprise Linux Services 1.0 for free. New customers will be charged $80 per user, he said.

Lenz said the Nterprise Linux Services 1.0 will provide the company with an opportunity to gain new customers. "We believe it will open a market outside our traditional base," he said. "This gives them [customers] a lot of choice.

"If you are a small to medium business and looking at applications you want to run, then we are providing that managability," he said.
