Microsoft moves on retail front

Microsoft is moving forward on its retail market initiative, releasing a beta version of its ActiveStore Software Development Kit (SDK) last week.

The ActiveStore architecture, based on Microsoft's Component Object Model (COM), Windows NT, and BackOffice, was unveiled last year with support from some 500 US retailers. The framework will allow retailers to link together and share data.

The beta will let software vendors test the ActiveStore System Framework Services, which address functions important to retailers, such as immediate crash recovery, centralised security, and a common set of inter-application messages for major events, Microsoft officials said.
