Microsoft breathes life into Windows 98, ME

Windows 98 and Millennium Edition users will have support for their operating systems extended by over two years, Microsoft announced on Monday.

Paid phone support for Windows 98, Windows 98 Second Edition (SE) and Windows Millennium Edition will be available until June 30, 2006.

Microsoft said during this time it will continue to review any security issues and take appropriate steps.

Support for Windows 98 had previously been set to end this Friday, 16 January 2004..

The decision was made in order to give customers clear and consistent product lifecycle, said Microsoft senior product marketing manager Danny Beck.

"Microsoft also wanted to bring Windows 98 SE into compliance with the company's current lifecycle policy for new products, which provides for support for seven years instead of the original four," he said.

Details of the extended support period for the products will be available online from Friday.
