Australian officials said there is "no official relationship between Dell and Hewlett-Packard", despite an announcement made in the US that the two vendors have joined forces.
From this week, Dell will resell HP's entire line of printers and scanners in the US. The move gives Dell the look of a full service systems provider that spans both direct and indirect sales, even though the company contends in its marketing campaigns that indirect sales are an unnecessary step in the PC distribution process.
HP officials are characterising the deal as part of the company's effort to "supply products where customers want to buy," recognising the growing popularity of the direct sales approach to which HP does not subscribe.
An HP Australia spokesperson said there was no plan to introduce such a scheme in Australia.
