BMC moves on Linux

BMC Software has entered the enterprise Linux arena with a series of new products.

While BMC previously supported some Linux distributions, the company has now extended support for several of its systems and database management products to enterprise-grade Linux distributions, product management director at BMC's Linux Solutions Group, Dave Hilbe, said.

"We used to focus on what some might call consumer versions of Linux that update fairly regularly, Red Hat 7 for example," he said. "We are now putting more emphasis on the enterprise level distributions."

BMC has added support for Red Hat's Enterprise Linux 2.1 and SuSE Linux's Linux Enterprise Server 8 to several of its products, including Deployment Manager for Linux Version 1.2, and its SmartDBA cross-platform database management tools.

The new version of Deployment Manager allows administrators to manage thousands of dissimilar Linux systems from a central location.

The tool supported inhouse Linux applications and disk sharing for IBM's Virtual Memory operating system, BMC said.

BMC has also expanded its family of products for managing mixed database environments with the addition of performance monitoring tools for Sybase and SQL Server databases.

BMC announced, this week, SmartDBA Performance Monitoring Solutions for Sybase's and Microsoft's database products.

The introduction of support for Sybase and Microsoft SQL Server rounded out the SmartDBA product family, BMC said. SmartDBA already supported IBM's DB2 and Oracle's database.

Still, the SmartDBA set offered for Oracle and IBM is broader than that for Sybase and Microsoft databases.

For Oracle and IBM, BMC also offers tools for space management and SQL tuning. BMC is looking at offering those features for Sybase and Microsoft database products, senior marketing manager at BMC, Tim Mueting, said.

The SmartDBA products for Sybase and SQL Server and the Linux products are available immediately. Pricing varies by licensing model.
