Fraud down as sales tax changes near

The new sales tax system is having a significant effect on tax fraud levels even before it goes into operation, tax officials have claimed.

This is despite the fact that it appears many Australian resellers have been slow in reacting to the September 1 sales tax deadline (ARN Aug 19, page 1).

The last six months have seen "significant increases" in sales tax collections within the computer industry, according to ATO assistant commissioner for withholding tax Mike Cebalo.

"We are getting a lot of intelligence from the industry about dodgy operators closing up shop and leaving instead of just reopening in a new location and a number of the remaining ones have cleaned up their acts.

"It seems they have interpreted the new legislation as a firm message that the Government is serious about doing something."
