Pushing the ATM solution

Ipsilon Networks and Digital have announced a strategic alliance to help users migrate from existing networking solutions to "scalable, robust, high performance IP switching". According to Ipsilon, the agreement marks the first milestone in the company's strategy to build industry-wide adoption of IP switching, a technology that combines the intelligence of IP routing with ATM hardware acceleration.

Under terms of the agreement, the companies will develop and implement Ipsilon's Generic Switch Management Protocol (GSMP) on Digital's GIGAswitch/ATM switch and will incorporate the Ipsilon Flow Management Protocol (IFMP) in Digital's servers and LAN switches.

"A major goal of this alliance is to deliver robust products that help customers migrate from shared solutions to the benefits of high performance switching," Digital's John Koole told ARN. The companies will also collaborate on enhancements to the base technology that supports ATM switches for mission-critical solutions. To reach this goal, the companies will develop traffic engineering, performance analysis and routing hardware, he said.
