Japanese IT company Softbank is buying 80 per cent of US memory board manufacturer Kingston Technology for $US1.5 billion. Originally a Japanese IT distributor, Softbank has been driven into many new areas over the past two years by majority owner Masayoshi Son. This includes buying Ziff-Davis publishing and the Comdex trade shows around the world. It also owns Yahoo, CyberCash, 20 per cent of Novell and has 40 per cent of the WWW advertising. As a result of the Kingston acquisition, in the US, Softbank now makes products, distributes products, solicits advertising for those products and reviews those products. Nice trick if you can manage it.
