IBM launches AS/400 as Web server

For those companies running AS/400s, and looking to add intranet or Internet services as well, IBM has a solution for you.

With the release of the 64-bit OS/400 version 3 release 7 - which includes support for Lotus Notes release 4, Windows 95 clients, and flexible storage systems for Unix, Macintosh, and Windows NT file names - IBM has also bundled I/NET's Webulator software.

The Webulator software will translate any AS/400 screen into HTML "on the fly" if the receiving screen can handle HTML via a Web browser, according to IBM.

Tony Del Rosso, of IBM's AS/400 business unit, said: "We can now take a traditional AS/400 screen and translate that into HTML for any web browser, without changing any OS/400 code."

I/NET's Commerce Server/400 is a secure Web server for the AS/400, according to I/NET's chairman, James Knapp. "The ability to do business electronically is becoming a necessity for many businesses," he said.

Commerce Server/400 runs on both the new 64-bit AS/400s and the traditional CISC-based AS/400s; however it requires OS/400 version 7 release 3 or above to run. by Richard MainIBMTel: 13 2426 Fax: (02) 9354 7766
